Welcome to Alto Neighborhood
Popular area with spectacular homes and semi-rural feel
The Alto neighborhood is a flat area of residential streets between Highway 101 and Camino Alto that has been in transition over the past decade. Alto has become one of Mill Valley’s most popular communities thanks to its proximity to 101 and newly built amenities such as Edna McGuire Elementary School and Mill Valley’s second Whole Foods. The Alto neighborhood has a semi-rural feel with large lots featuring spectacular multi-million dollar contemporary homes. Although the Alto neighborhood isn’t within walking distance of town, it offers multiple bike paths. If you like the idea of having a close commute to work and walking your kids to school, this neighborhood delivers.
Homes in the Alto neighborhood enjoy convenient organic grocery shopping at the Whole Foods Market
on Blithedale Avenue. Next to Whole Foods, The Cantina
serves delicious Mexican classics and margaritas in a lively space with indoor fireplaces and an outdoor patio with fire pits.
To the neighborhood’s north, Mill Valley Chickens
is a unique local business selling heritage chickens, chicken coops, and all manner of chicken rearing supplies. Other shops and restaurants can easily be reached in Sycamore Park and Downtown Mill Valley.
The Alto neighborhood is close to outdoor recreation at Hauke Park
and Bayfront Park to the south and Camino Alto Open Space Preserve to the north. Camino Alto Preserve covers 170 acres with hiking and biking trails running through diverse grassland and woodland habitats. The preserve’s trails also offer great views of grazing horses on nearby Horse Hill. Head to the preserve in early summer to see bright pink rockrose in bloom.
The Alto neighborhood is served by the Mill Valley Elementary School District and Tamalpais Union High School District.
